What is Art Therapy & 3 Reasons To Try It

Y’all. Art therapy is the best. So what is art therapy?

Art therapy is a transformative therapuetic technique meant to enhance your therapy experience.

Our art therapist, Kim, utilizes a variety of materials and art processes. Together you and Kim will create an art therapy experience specific for you and your needs. People with all levels of artistic ability can benefit from the art therapy process, so nope, you do not need to be “good at art” for it. Art therapy is offered in conjunction with traditional talk therapy and can be utilized during in-person or virtual services.

So with all of that fancy lingo out of the way, here are 3 reasons you need to try it:

#1. Creativity, duh!

Whether or not you see yourself as a creative, art, imagination, making, creativity create a connection to a different part of your brain. When you allow yourself to freely create, you are channeling growth in yourself.

#2. What do I do with my hands?!?!

A lot of clients tell me (and I’ve felt this myself when I’m in therapy) that they don’t know what to do with their hands!!! It may seem small, but a huge part of the therapy experience is physical. Where do we look? How do we sit? Am I comfortable? And one of those physical sensations is what do I do with my hands. Do I pet this furry pillow like a dog? Do I fidget with my keys?

Art therapy not only connects us to a specific part of our brain, but it connects our physical sensations to our mental needs. When we allow our hands to move and create, we positively externalize.

#3. Its unique and fun

This one is pretty obvious, but its just some different. Traditional talk therapy isn’t for everyone. Sometimes we need something a little extra and art therapy can be just that. It doesn’t have to be a huge focus, but for those of us that need a little extra something something… it’s perfect.
