Animal assisted therapy (AAT) might be a good fit for you if…
- You like animals (DUH)
- You find animals calming to be around
- Therapy looks a little uncomfortable or stiff or boring or overwhelming
So… what are some of the benefits of choosing AAT over traditional therapy? There are sooooo many! For starters animals are known to lower blood pressure and sense of stress, so in a therapeutic environment they often help the humans feel more comfortable and confident when starting therapy! They also fill awkward pauses (although don’t be too worried about this). They can be (positively) distracting as many people feel uncomfortable sitting and staring directly at their therapist. Animals allow you to pet, play, snuggle, and watch them; all great alternatives to sitting and staring directly at your therapist. This helps if you ever get self conscious about eye contact (I know I do).
They have been shown to improve confidence and self-esteem, help build trust and confidence faster (meaning getting to the bulk of the work quicker and more effectively!), aid in practicing healthy attachment and boundaries, improve problem-solving abilities, and improve empathy levels.
Animals provide unfailing love, compassion, and no-judgement in an environment where these factors are critical to the process!
All I know is, if I am choosing between a therapist and therapist with a cute, snuggly, loving pupper(s) or other animal… my choice is pretty easy. But, hey, that’s just me 😉
