How to Better Balance Your Time as a 20 Something

If you are like me, you’ve got a bazillion things going on at all times. Work, friendships, relationship/dating, parents, school, pets, goals, sleep, fitness, travel, finances, relaxing, binging netflix, reading, meditating, brunching, and on and on and on…

It can feel IMPOSSIBLE to adequately balance all of these responsibilities, something always feels like it is falling behind (for me that thing is never netflix, much more likely to be fitness or finances). So, how can we start to balance our responsibilities more effectively?

Well first, identify what is important to you. What will you regret letting fall behind? Try splitting your responsibilities between NEEDS & WANTS. Focus on your needs first. Next try putting your WANTS in these categories: V IMPORTANT, KINDA IMPORTANT, NOT REALLY THAT IMPORTANT, and NOT IMPORTANT.  You can now visualize your list of responsibilities in order of importance.

Next step; try tracking a week of your time. This is a pretty intensive exercise, but pretty freaking helpful too. Get a notebook or use the sheet down at the bottom of this post and write down where your time was spent each day, be specific! After you’ve done this, analyze where you have gaps of time that are either not being utilized or could be more efficiently utilized.

Next, utilize that empty time by putting your established hierarchy of needs and wants in those times! And when I say “put them in those times”, I mean get a damn planner or use your google calendar and ACTUALLY schedule them out. Also remember it is OKAY to not have enough time to do everything. Focus on the things that are important to YOU and your WELL BEING and make time for those things.

Here is one of the better ways that I track my time by (thank you pinterest):
